A forecast by International Data Corporation (IDC) predicts that by the end of 2002, there will be more wireless subscribers capable of Internet access than wired users. In fact, IDC predicts that almost 1.3 billion people worldwide will be plugged into Web-capable phones by 2004, compared to just 700 million people with ordinary Net connections. Another 100-200 million or so will use a variety of new kinds of devices like Internet appliances, gaming machines, set-top boxes, and everyday household appliances. The chief obstacle to ubiquitous computing comes from the technology itself. Multiple formats, markup languages, device capabilities, and network constraints threaten to limit the promise of pervasive computing.
